Mitte der 1980er Jahre kommt Karsten Konrad nach Westberlin und erlebt dort noch während seiner Studienjahre den Fall der Berliner Mauer – ein Ereignis, das ihn nachhaltig prägen sollte. Als sich die wiedervereinigte Stadt zu häuten beginnt, starten Konrads ‚Goldene Neunziger‘. Überall wird modernisiert, abgerissen und ausgemistet. Ein gewaltiger Fundus an Baustoffen und alter Einrichtung eröffnet sich dem Künstler und begünstigt seine bis heute charakteristische Praxis: Von Beginn an stellt die Materialsuche auf Schrottplätzen, Flohmärkten und der Straße einen wesentlichen Bestandteil seines Schaffensprozesses dar.
Während sich Fokus des Künstlers zeitweise auf den Stadtraum richtete, konzentriert er sich in jüngster Zeit vor allem auf das Interieur. Auch die Ausstellung nimmt auf das Innenleben des IG-Metall-Hauses Bezug: Vom Glaserker aus, der die Hauptfront des Gebäudes zur Linken flankiert, rankt eine Skulptur in den Ausstellungsraum und deutet wie eine Galionsfigur bereits von weitem auf ein Merkmal der von Mendelsohn entworfenen Architektur hin: Sowohl das Material, als auch die in sich gewundene Form verweisen auf die Messingverkleidungen, die nicht nur die Fassade und den Eingangsbereich veredeln, sondern auch das Geländer der zentralen und alle Stockwerke durchziehenden Wendeltreppe.
Die einzelnen Elemente in Konrads Skulpturen und Bildwerken deuten schließlich auf die leidenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung des Künstlers mit Architektur hin. Der Bildhauer untersucht Außen- und Innenräume auf ihre skulpturalen Qualitäten, wobei er in beinahe archäologischer Manier Relikte vergangener Baustile und Einrichtungsmoden birgt. Jedes Fragment zeugt von einem anderen Jahrzehnt, erzählt eine andere Geschichte. Die Narrative, die seine Arbeiten beinhalten, zeugen vom intuitiven Gebrauch der Cut-Up-Technik und des Samplings: Aus Bruchstücken fügt Konrad, ungeachtet ihrer ursprünglichen Hintergründe, Ensembles zusammen, wobei die Einzelteile auch in den neuen, dynamisierten und belebten Zusammenschlüssen einen kaleidoskopischen Blick auf die Vergangenheit geben.

Seit 2014 kooperiert das Haus am Lützowplatz mit dem IG Metall Bezirk Berlin-Brandenburg-Sachsen und verantwortet zweimal im Jahr die Ausstellungen in dem 1929/30 von Erich Mendelsohn errichteten Haus des Deutschen Metallarbeiterverbandes an der Alten Jakobstraße.

In the mid-1980s, Karsten Konrad comes to West Berlin, where he experiences, still in his student years, the fall of the Berlin Wall – an event that was to have a lasting effect on him. Konrad’s ‘Golden Nineties’ start as the reunified city begins to skin: Modernization and demolition characterize the decade. People are mucking out their environments. An enormous stack of building materials and old furnishings opens up for the artist and favors a practice that he follows up until today: from the beginning, the search for materials on scrap yards, flea markets and on the street constitutes an essential aspect of his creative work.
For a while the artist focused on urban space, whereas in recent times he concentrates primarily on the interior. In this sense, also the exhibition draws attention to the inner workings of the IG-Metall-Haus (Metal Workers Union Building): from a glass oriel, flanking the main front of the building on the left, a sculpture creeps into the exhibition space and, like a figurehead, hints at a feature of the architecture designed by Erich Mendelsohn already from afar: The material as well as the winding form refer to the brass cladding which refines not only the façade and the entrance area, but also the railing of the central spiral staircase that runs through all floors.
Finally, the single elements in Konrad’s sculptures and reliefs point to the artist’s passionate exploration of architecture. The sculptor examines exterior and interior spaces for their sculptural qualities, harboring relics of past construction and furnishing styles in an almost archaeological manner. Each fragment bears witness to another decade, tells a different story. The narratives comprised by his work testify the intuitive use of techniques like cut-up and sampling: Konrad creates ensembles out of fragments, regardless of their original backgrounds, with the individual parts giving a kaleidoscopic view into the past even in the new, dynamic and animated groupings.
