In diesem Gespräch sprechen der Künstler Umut Azad Akkel und die Kuratorin Ulya Soley über Akkels künstlerische Praxis und die Themen, die in der Ausstellung Holding My Drink in the Corner verhandelt werden.
Ausgangspunkt ist ihre erste Zusammenarbeit für die Publikation zur Ausstellung A Place Never Fully Held am KW Institute for Contemporary Art by BPA// Berlin, in der Soley über Akkels Werk und Praxis schrieb. Das Gespräch greift diese Zusammenarbeit erneut auf und nähert sich ihr über Akkels Arbeit The Path.
Die derzeit vor dem Haus am Lützowplatz platzierte Arbeit The Path fokussiert Bewegung, Übergang und die Politik des Raums als weit verzweigtes Gefüge von Wegen, die Vorstellungen von Zugehörigkeit, Grenzen und Erinnerung in sich tragen. Sie versteht Gehen und Navigation sowohl als physische als auch als konzeptuelle Erfahrungen, die durch Geschichte und Machtverhältnisse geprägt sind, und zeichnet zugleich Verbindungen zu den umfassenderen Fragestellungen nach, die Akkels künstlerische Praxis heute bestimmen.
Ulya Soley arbeitet als Kuratorin am Hamburger Bahnhof. Sie absolvierte ihren MA in Culture, Criticism, and Curation am Central Saint Martins und ihren BA in Kunstgeschichte und Psychologie an der McGill University. Von 2013 bis 2025 war sie am Pera Museum in Istanbul als Kuratorin und Publikationsredakteurin tätig, wo sie zudem zahlreiche von den Sammlungen des Museums inspirierte zeitgenössische Projekte initiierte und leitete. Neben ihrer institutionellen Arbeit hat sie unabhängig Ausstellungen und öffentliche Programme kuratiert. Zu ihren kuratorischen Projekten zählen unter anderem Souvenirs of the Future und A Question of Taste am Pera Museum, all familiar, all foreign bei Versus Art Project, Spirits on the Ground bei DIANA NY, Hosting Bodies bei Sanatorium sowie How shall we dress for the occasion? Protocinema im 601 Artspace in New York.
Sie war redaktionell an verschiedenen Künstler*innenbüchern und Magazinen beteiligt; ihre Texte erschienen unter anderem in Publikationen wie Texte zur Kunst, e-flux, Sanat Dünyamız, Argonotlar, Manifold und Art Unlimited. 2024 war sie Fellow an der Kulturakademie Tarabya, wo sie zu queerem Nachtleben als Form des Widerstands forschte. Sie ist Preisträgerin des British Council Culture and Creativity Award und Teilnehmerin des Future Leaders Programme des British Council 2023–24. Ihre Praxis konzentriert sich auf die Erforschung zukünftiger Szenarien aus einer queer-feministischen Perspektive und nutzt spekulatives Denken und Experimentieren als methodischen Ansatz.
Umut Azad Akkel (geb. 1991, Izmir) studierte von 2010 bis 2014 Industriedesign an der Kadir Has Universität in Istanbul. Von 2016 bis 2022 studierte er Bildende Kunst an der Universität der Künste Berlin, zuletzt als Meisterschüler in der Klasse von Ina Weber. Er erhielt 2020 den DAAD-Preis für internationale Studierende, 2021 den Playground Art Prize (2. Platz) und 2022 das Else-Neumann-Stipendium des Landes Berlin. Zu seinen jüngsten Ausstellungen zählen Präsentationen am KW Institute for Contemporary Art und Kunst Raum Mitte im Rahmen der BPA// Ausstellung 2025 (6. Dezember 2025 – 11. Januar 2026).

As part of the solo exhibition Umut Azad Akkel – Holding My Drink in the Corner, we warmly invite you to a talk with Ulya Soley and Umut Azad Akkel on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 6:30 pm.

In this conversation, artist Umut Azad Akkel and curator Ulya Soley will discuss Akkel’s artistic practice and the themes explored in the exhibition Holding My Drink in the Corner. Taking as a starting point their first collaboration for the publication accompanying the A Place Never Fully Held exhibition at KW Institute for Contemporary Art by BPA// Berlin, in which Soley wrote about Akkel’s work and practice, the conversation will revisit the collaboration through Akkel’s The Path. Currently placed in front of Haus am Lützowplatz, The Path focuses on movement, transition, and the politics of space as a large body of pathways that carry ideas of belonging, borders, and memory. It frames walking and navigation as both physical and conceptual experiences shaped by history and power relations, while tracing its connections to the broader concerns that shape Akkel’s practice today.
Ulya Soley works as a curator at Hamburger Bahnhof. She completed her MA in Culture, Criticism, and Curation at Central Saint Martins, and her BA in Art History and Psychology at McGill University. From 2013 to 2025, she worked at Pera Museum in Istanbul as a curator and publications editor, where she also commissioned and led numerous contemporary projects inspired by the museum’s collections. Alongside her institutional work, she has independently curated exhibitions and public programs. Some of her curatorial projects include Souvenirs of the Future and A Question of Taste at Pera Museum; all familiar, all foreign at Versus Art Project; Spirits on the Ground at DIANA NY; Hosting Bodies at Sanatorium; and How shall we dress for the occasion? Protocinema at 601 Artspace in New York.
She has contributed editorial work to various artist books and magazines, and her writing has appeared in publications such as Texte zur Kunst, e-flux, Sanat Dünyamız, Argonotlar, Manifold, and Art Unlimited. In 2024, she was a fellow at the Kulturakademie Tarabya, where she conducted research on queer nightlife as a form of resistance. She is a recipient of the British Council Culture and Creativity Award and a participant in the British Council’s 2023–24 Future Leaders programme. Her practice centers on exploring future scenarios through a queer feminist lens, employing speculative thinking and experimentation as methodology.
Umut Azad Akkel (b. 1991, Izmir) studied Industrial Design at Kadir Has University in Istanbul from 2010 to 2014. From 2016 to 2022, he studied Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts, most recently as a Meisterschüler in the class of Ina Weber. He received the DAAD Prize for International Students in 2020, the Playground Art Prize (2nd place) in 2021, and the Else Neumann Scholarship of the State of Berlin in 2022.
