Heike Catherina Mertens ist geschäftsführender Vorstand und Kuratorin der Schering Stiftung. Sie studierte Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie und Soziologie und nach einer wissenschaftlichen und publizistischen Tätigkeit im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Kunst arbeitete sie von 2000 bis 2007 als Kuratorin für Kunst im öffentlichen Raum. 2001 gründete sie in Berlin den Verein ’stadtkunstprojekte‘ zur Förderung von Kunst im Stadtraum. Seit 2007 ist sie künstlerische Leiterin der Schering Stiftung. Neben ihrer Stiftungstätigkeit lehrt sie regelmäßig im Rahmen des Weiterbildungsprogrammes „Kuratieren“ an der Universität der Künste Berlin und publiziert Bücher zur zeitgenössischen Kunst. Sie ist Mitglied im Hochschulrat der Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, Mitglied im Vorstand des Bundesverbandes Deutscher Stiftungen, Mitglied im Kuratorium zur Vergabe des KAIROS-Preises der Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S. und Kuratoriumsmitglied von Common Purpose Berlin.

Heike Catherina Mertens is curator and managing director of the Schering Stiftung. She studied art history, philosophy and sociology and after academic work in the field of contemporary art, she worked as a curator for public art from 2000 until 2007. In 2001, she founded stadtkunstprojekte, a Berlin-based association to promote urban public art. Since 2007, she is head of the cultural department of the Schering Stiftung. Alongside her work at the foundation, she regularly teaches at the Berlin University of the Arts as part of the further education program „Curating“ and publishes books on contemporary art. She is also a member of the University Council (Hochschulrat) of the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg, of the Board of Directors of the Association of German Foundations, of the board of trustees for the award of the KAIROS Prize, given by the Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S. and oft he board of trustees of Common Purpose Berlin.
