Werner Busch, geb. 1944 in Prag. Studium der Kunstgeschichte in Tübingen, Freiburg, Wien und London. 1971/72 Stipendium am Warburg Institute in London, dort auch Abfassung der Dissertation. Promotion 1973 über William Hogarth. Nach kurzer Beschäftigung am Reallexikon zur deutschen Kunstgeschichte im Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in München von 1974-1981 wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Kunsthistorischen Institut der Universität Bonn. Dort 1980 Habilitation mit einer Arbeit zum deutschen 19.Jahrhundert. Nach Lehrstuhlvertretung in Marburg von 1981-1988 Professur für Kunstgeschichte an der Ruhr Universität Bochum. 1983-1985 Leitung des Funkkolleg Kunst. Ab 1988 Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte an der Freien Universität Berlin. Abgelehnte Rufe nach Tübingen und Bonn. Mitglied der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. 2003/2004 Kollegiat am Historischen Kolleg in München. Von 2003-2009 Leitung des Sonderforschungsbereiches 626 „Ästhetische Erfahrung im Zeichen der Entgrenzung der Künste“. Mitarbeiter an zahlreichen Ausstellungen, teils als Kurator, unter anderem  in Frankfurt am Main, Dresden, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, München, Groningen, Zürich, Madrid oder Wien. Nach der Pensionierung 2010 Lehrstuhlvertretung an der Universität Basel 2010/11. 2016 Richard Hamann-Preis für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Marburg, 2019 Ehrenmitgliedschaft im Deutschen Kunsthistorikerverband.

Werner Busch, born in Prague in 1944. Studied art history in Tübingen, Freiburg, Vienna and London. In 1971–72, he held a scholarship at the Warburg Institute in London, where he also wrote his doctoral thesis. Awarded his doctorate in 1973 with a thesis on William Hogarth. Following a brief period working on the *Reallexikon zur deutschen Kunstgeschichte* at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich, he was a research assistant at the Institute of Art History at the University of Bonn from 1974 to 1981. There, in 1980, he completed his habilitation with a thesis on 19th-century German art. Following a period as acting professor in Marburg, he was Professor of Art History at the Ruhr University Bochum from 1981 to 1988. From 1983 to 1985, he headed the ‘Funkkolleg Kunst’ (Art Radio Course). From 1988, he held the Chair of Art History at the Free University of Berlin. Declined appointments to Tübingen and Bonn. Member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. In 2003–2004, he was a fellow at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich. From 2003 to 2009, he headed the Collaborative Research Centre 626 ‘Aesthetic Experience in the Context of the Blurring of Boundaries between the Arts’. Contributed to numerous exhibitions, in some cases as a curator, including in Frankfurt am Main, Dresden, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Munich, Groningen, Zurich, Madrid and Vienna. Following his retirement in 2010, he served as a acting professor at the University of Basel in 2010–11. In 2016, he was awarded the Richard Hamann Prize for Art History at the University of Marburg; in 2019, he was made an honorary member of the German Association of Art Historians.
