Als am 24. Dezember 1968 die Astronauten der Apollo 8 Mission zurück auf ihren Heimatplaneten blickten, entstand mit „Earthrise“ ungeplant eines der wichtigsten Bilder der Menschheitsgeschichte. Gleichzeitig visionierten viele Erdlinge, nicht nur unter dem Einfluss von psychoaktiven Substanzen, neue Formen des menschlichen Zusammenlebens. Doch die Utopien hielten nur für eine begrenzte Zeit und machten seit dem Beginn der 1970er Jahre zunehmend Raum für Dystopien, die sich auch im Science-Fiction der kommenden Dekaden abbildeten. Mit der Entwicklung des Special-Effect-Kinos entstanden zunehmend überwältigende Endzeit-Szenarien mit fragwürdigen Erlösungsmodellen. Die Lecture-Performance ist eine spekulative Zeitreise durch die vergangenen 56 Jahre mit einem offenen Ausgang in der Gegenwart und Zukunft.
Bjørn Melhus hat für die Ausstellung „ÜberLeben – Fragen an die Zukunft“ die Video-Installation „Resolution“ neu produziert. In Referenz auf die Sterbeszene mit Edward G. Robinson aus dem Film „Soylent Green“ liegt ein 112 Jahre alter Mann auf einem Krankenhausbett und wird durch einen scheinbar endlosen, industriell anmutenden Flur geschoben. Der Mann spricht mit einer kindlichen, androgynen Stimme, die tatsächlich von einer Frau stammt, direkt in die Kamera. Der gesamte Monolog erzählt die Geschehnisse auf der Erde der letzten 112 Jahre. Dabei spielt die Zahl 7 wiederholt eine bedeutende Rolle. Zunächst werden als Prolog die ersten sieben Lebensjahre von 1966 bis 1973 beschrieben, als Aufbruch in ein neues Zeitalter, das mit den Erscheinungsjahren der Romanvorlage von Harry Harrison (1966) und der des Films (1973) korreliert. Dann werden die Ereignisse des Jahres 1973 und deren dystopischen Folgen in den kommenden 49 (7×7) Jahren bis zum Jahr 2022 beschrieben, als die Welt kurz vor dem Ende stand. Nach einer globalen Pandemie und einem Dritten Weltkrieg zeigten sich die ersten Anzeichen einer alles zerstörenden Klimakatastrophe. Gleichzeitig wurde das Jahr 2022 jedoch auch zu einem Wendepunkt, vermutlich durch eine Virusmutation, die das Gehirn der Menschen zum Guten veränderte. Was in den ersten Jahren noch nicht wirklich spürbar war, wurde jedoch in den folgenden 49 Jahren zu einem globalen Heilungsprozess, der von Empathie und gegenseitiger Unterstützung geprägt war. Die Natur und das Klima erholten sich und alle Menschen teilten friedlich die Ressourcen. Dieser erstaunliche Entwicklungsprozess ist dann im Jahr 2071 abgeschlossen. Der Epilog der letzten sieben Jahre, 2071-2078, ist die Lebensbeschreibung eines transzendentalen Urzustandes.

When the astronauts of the Apollo 8 mission looked back at their home planet on December 24, 1968, they took with „Earthrise“ unexpectedly one of the most important images in human history. At the same time, many earthlings, not only under the influence of psychoactive substances, visioned new forms of human coexistence. But the utopias lasted only for a limited time and since the beginning of the 1970s increasingly made room for dystopias, which were also reflected in the science fiction of the coming decades. With the development of special effect cinema, increasingly overwhelming end-time scenarios with questionable models of redemption emerged. The lecture performance is a speculative journey through the past 56 years with an open outcome in the present and future.
Bjørn Melhus has newly produced the video installation „Resolution“ for the exhibition „SurVival – Questions to the Future“. In reference to the death scene with Edward G. Robinson from the film „Soylent Green,“ a 112-year-old man lies on a hospital bed and is pushed through a seemingly endless, industrial-looking hallway. The man speaks directly to the camera in a childlike, androgynous voice that is actually a woman’s. The entire monologue recounts the events on Earth over the past 112 years. The number 7 repeatedly plays an important role. First, as a prologue, the first seven years of life from 1966 to 1973 are described, as the dawn of a new age that correlates with the years of publication of the novel by Harry Harrison (1966) and that of the film (1973). Then the events of 1973 and their dystopian consequences are described over the next 49 (7×7) years to 2022, when the world was about to end. After a global pandemic and a Third World War, the first signs of an all-destroying climate catastrophe appeared. At the same time, however, the year 2022 also became a turning point, presumably due to a viral mutation that changed people’s brains for the better. What was not really noticeable in the first years, however, became a global healing process in the following 49 years, characterized by empathy and mutual support. Nature and the climate recovered and all people peacefully shared resources. This amazing development process then came to an end in 2071. The epilogue of the last seven years, 2071-2078, is the life description of a transcendental primordial state.
